"But with such grand displays as Nature is making here, how grand are her reservations, bestowed only upon those who devotedly seek them!" –John Muir

Asahel Curtis’ photograph of Mirror Lake once graced a postage stamp on August 3, 1934. We spent most of a July day hiking to this remote lake located in Indian Henry’s Hunting Grounds in Mount Rainier National Park. We had lightweight equipment and we thought about the weight Asahel had to carry to get his view camera up the same trail. Then it dawned on us that he used a pack horse. We swam in the lake before returning to the trail for the hike back.
