As we hiked the Skyline Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, we encountered hundreds of Aphrodite Arctic Fritillary butterflies enjoying the fields of aster, bear grass, and heather. Mount Rainer is considered an "Arctic Island" in a temperate zone. The flowers were near their peak in mid-July at Paradise but the peak time will vary from year to year and the flowers will always peak later at the higher elevations.
